Postgraduate Programmes
Postgraduate programmes are fundamental to the ESALA's intellectual life. They are considered to be spaces in which emergent agendas in scholarship and practice are fostered.
Postgraduate programmes are offered in both 'taught' and 'research' modes. Taught programmes, typically one-year MSc degrees, involve lecture- seminar- and often studio-based modules relating to a specialized field, totalling 120 credits, and a 60 credit dissertation on a topic of the candidates choosing. Research mode programmes (typically MSc by Research and PhD) involve academic supervision and the production of a more ambitious thesis or dissertation supported by training in research methods.
The MArch is the two-year professional (ARB Part 2) architecture programme, and it is jointly delivered by the University of Edinburgh and eca under the banner of ESALA. It is for those who have undertaken a Part 1, or three/four year equivalent, programme and wish to complete their professional architectural training.
We offer a wide range of specialist postgraduate programmes (MSc, MPhil and PhD) in areas such as digital media, urban design, sustainable design and landscape architecture. Currently these programmes are delivered by the Unversity of Edinburgh and eca (ESALA's partner institutions) separately. All of our postgraduate programmes do, however, offer module sharing and cross-supervisory arrangments so that candidates for postgraduate degrees in ESALA benefit from the wider range of academic expertise and module choice.
Postgraduate programmes in architecture and landscape architecture are well-served by facilities, administrative and technical support, and academic expertise. The Graduate Schools at the University of Edinburgh and eca, together with ESALA and the City of Edinburgh, offer a stimulating environment for postgraduate study in architecture, landscape architecture and associated disciplines. The Graduate Schools are within five minutes walk of the National Library of Scotland, the City Central Library, and the University and eca libraries, which together offer one of the largest research collections in the United Kingdom. These collections are augmented by a flourishing ESALA libraries at the Chambers Street and Lauriston Place campuses.
