Refreshments
Refreshments and nibbles will be provided at the introductory meeting on Wednesday. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided on the Thursday and Friday, however, lunches are not included and so you will need to go out and get a sandwich from the surrounding are.
Preparation
Before you attend please read, and re-read, through a copy of the Contract (SBCC Scottish Building Contract 2005 with Quantities). Start with the contents pages to get a feel for the clauses and how to navigate yourself. We will send you a PDF of the Contents pages, the Articles of Agreement and Contract Particulars. You will be given a Bill of Quantities that gives detailed information on the contract particulars from which you will prepare the contract for signing before the start of the game.
You will be put into groups of 3 or 4 and will work as a team throughout the 2 days of the game. The team represents an architectural practice that are Contract Administrators for a project which is about to go on site. The first stage will be to complete the contract document itself and so you should read this carefully. The game is fully web-based. Each group will be given a separate password into their ‘game’. Each group will be given a ‘controller’ who will be sited in the room, but is meant to be remote. They will correspond by e-mail with the groups.
The game consists of a series of Scenarios or events and the group has to make a response by e-mail as if they are writing to the person concerned. This may include correspondence with the client, consultants, contractor or other parties. Only once your controller is satisfied that you have given a good and appropriate response will you be allowed to progress to the next scenario. This continues over the two days. Ideally we would get through all of the scenarios by the end of the second day but not all groups will achieve this. Once we have started, the groups will be able to work at their own pace and can take a lunch break when they wish. There will be two coffee breaks each day.
What you will need to bring
A complete copy of the SBC/Q/Scot (Revised October 2007) Publisher:SBCC
Standard Building Contract With Quantities for use in Scotland. (This costs £32 from RIAS Bookshop, so see if you can bring along an office copy. As long as each group has one copy between them this will be satisfactory, and we will aim to have an electronic copy available). A copy of the Architect’s job book and SCA 2000 also would not go amiss.
