MA(Hons) Architectural Design

The MA(Hons) Architectural Design leads to ARB/RIBA Part 1 qualification, the first qualification required in training to be an architect. Three years of this programme are spent on campus whilst 1 year (Semester 2 of Year 3 and Semester 1 of Year 4) are spent in practice on 'Placement' with an accredited architectural practice.

The MA (Hons) Architectural Design is delivered by the University of Edinburgh. Recruitment to this programme closed in 2008. Potential students should apply to the BA/MA(Hons) Architecture.

Teaching and learning in this programme takes place through a combination of studio-based projects, national and international field trips, lectures, seminars, and practical sessions in the workshop. As the programme unfolds students are offered increased scope and support to develop independent modes of creative thinking and practice.

First year courses do not assume any previous experience of architecture, and give a broad introduction to the discipline. Basic themes are quickly developed and intensified in Year 2. Years 3 and 4 - the 'Junior and Senior Honours' Years - place greater emphasis on self-directed learning.
