Relationships between architecture and engineering
The architecture of the 20th century has been greatly influenced by the development of technology, structures and materials. The contribution of the engineer to contemporary architecture, although understated, has been considerable. As either a key enabling member of the design team, such as Peter Rice and Anthony Hunt, or as designers and architects in their own right such as Eladio Dieste and Heinz Isler, engineers have played a significant role in the concept and design of modern buildings.
Remo Pedreschi and Angus Macdonald edit an innovative series of books, The Engineer's Contribution to Architecture, published by Thomas Telford and the RIBA, each presenting the philosophy of a 20th century engineer. To-date five books have been published, on Peter Rice, Eladio Dieste, Heinz Isler, Tony Hunt and Owen Williams. Books on the work of Ove Arup and Jean Prouve are in progress.
Further insights into the works of these engineers are made by associated projects including practical construction studies of innovative techniques and computer modelling of unusual and innovative structures.
