Student Community

Students play an essential role in the life of ESALA, not only through their everyday studio practice, their academic work and their annual colonization of studio spaces, labs and workshops, but also by participating in the management of ESALA through its committee structure.

The University Undergraduate student society, EUSAS and the eca Student Society, Archie, both provide a lively forum for discussion and social life, organizing a diverse range of public lectures, film screenings, and drawing classes.

There are around three dozen postgraduate students in the Department from a variety of countries pursuing individual research for the degrees of MPhil and PhD through research or design practice. At present their work relates to: theory, history, landscape, digital media, environmental science and construction. They organise a weekly seminar series and edit an annual journal, Edinburgh Architecture Research (EAR) publishing working papers by students and academic staff.
